Cuba needs to modernize its Soviet-era stockpiles but Russia lacks the resources

Cuba is very interested in upgrading their weapons and war material dating from the Soviet times, but lacks financial resources, said RIA Novosti Polina Temerin, expert of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies.

"Cuba in more than one occasion led to Russia's request to modernize their arsenals. But the problem is still pending for scarce financial resources, "he said.

Cuba's revenues now come from the tourism sector, agriculture and the work of outside specialists, first, of physicians. But these sources can not recoup the costs required to modernize Armed Forces said.

Cuba proposes to invest in Russian energy sector, particularly in oil extraction. When entering into such contracts, Havana reserves 51% of the shares and delivers 49% to investors, he added.

From 1961 to 1991, the Soviet Union to Cuba provided arms and military equipment and maintain it for 16,000 million dollars. Havana received T-55 tanks and T-62, armored personnel carriers, air defense systems, aircraft MiG -29, MiG-23 and MiG-21, Mi-24 helicopters, Mi-17 Mi-8 , Mi-14 and Ka-28, submarines, combat ships and boats, guns, media, etc.
